Berwick Bandits’ visit to Edinburgh last night ended almost before it began.

After two false starts to the opening race – the first of which saw home rider Ryan Fisher disqualified for crashing out on the first turn – it was third time unlucky for Berwick’s No 1, Czech star Adrian Rymel.

From the third attempt to start the race, Edinburgh’s Australian captain Matthew Wethers and Polish Bandit Marcin Rempala bumped together, and as they parted entering the first bend Rempala’s chain apparently snapped, sending his bike swinging outwards towards the safety fence, colliding with his partner Rymel and both riders came down.

Although a simple-looking crash, it was quickly evident that Rymel was seriously injured, with track paramedics taking the utmost care in his attention while lying on the track.

34-year-old Rymel was taken directly from the circuit to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, with the track’s paramedical team still in attendance, in the stadium ambulance.

With no medical cover left at the stadium, racing was abandoned.

Late last night, following a scan it was confirmed Adrian Rymel had suffered a broken bone in his neck, and would be transferred from the Royal Infirmary to Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital, where he will undergo an operation on Saturday.

Following this operation, a further bulletin will be issued.

The very latest news on the rider’s condition will also be announced to supporters at Bandits’ next match, against Redcar Bears at Shielfield Park tonight.

Berwick club owner John Anderson attended the Infirmary last night along with Adrian’s team-mate Jade Mudgway, and was at pains to praise both Edinburgh Speedway’s medical staff, and that of the Royal Infirmary.

“It is awful to have Adrian suffer this injury from a simple-looking incident” he said. “But I’m gratified that he is receiving such excellent attention – he’s in the best of hands”.
